FAQs

Frequently asked questions
How much does the Portugal Golden Visa cost?
Besides the investment amount, the Investor shall bear the legal fees and Immigration Services fees. The total amount will depend on the number of family members. Tools like the simulator at GoldenVisaForPortugal can help estimate total costs, including eventual nationality expenses.
What family members can I include in my Portuguese Golden Visa Application?
Spouse, civil partner, children, children with 18 years old or more (if dependent, studying and single), parents and parents in law (if dependents or with more than 65 years old).
Can I include children over 18 years old?
Children over 18 can be included if they are single, enrolled in full-time education and financially dependent on the main applicant.
Do I have to take a Portuguese language test?
A A2-level certification is a mandatory requirement to apply for the Portuguese Nationality. The applicant can either achieve such level by attending to an official course or by taking the test designed by the Portuguese entities for such purposes.
What are the tax implications?
For most Golden Visa investment routes (e.g., funds and donation), no additional taxes apply.
How long does the process take?
The Golden Visa takes 5 years – this means that after 5 years of filing your application you can apply for the Portuguese citizenship. In addition to it, we advise 2 months between starting the process and filing your application. This time can vary for longer or shorter but it’s a reasonable timeframe to consider.
Do I need a lawyer?
You will need a lawyer because several steps during the Golden Visa require a lawyer. Steps such as obtaining your NIF, onboarding at a Fund and filing your application will require juridic acts that a standard person can’t perform.
What happens if the program changes?
Even if the program changes, there is usually a transitional period, where applications can still be filed under the current law. As long as your application has been submitted, it’s considered grandfathered by the law, so it will not be at risk. The only time where the new law applies, according to the Portuguese Constitution, is if it’s more favorable.
Am I obliged to open a bank account?
You are required to open a bank account because the Golden Visa application requires a bank declaration attesting the transfer of capital from abroad to Portugal. We also advise to select a bank well aware of the Golden Visa proceedings to avoid further delays.
Can I change between investments?
The Law in force does not forbit to change your investment if you keep the same option of investment originally chosen (change from Fund A to Fund B for instance). If you want to change between different options of investment (Fund option to Real Estate option), formal confirmation shall be requested from the Immigration Office (AIMA) prior to any action.
Can I use a personal company?
Yes. The law in force allows you to invest through a Portuguese sole shareholder company. This means that as a prior step you shall incorporate a Portuguese company when the investor – main applicant in the Golden Visa process must be the sole shareholder.
Can I purchase a real estate?
Until October 2023 some real estate acquisitions were qualified to apply for the Golden Visa program. Since then, the available investment options for Golden Visa program no longer include real estate options. Notwithstanding, any foreign is entitled to purchase a real estate in Portugal for personal use or investment purposes.
How to choose the investment?
The right Golden Visa investment depends on your goals and circumstances. Start by identifying what matters most to you—residency, returns, or lifestyle. Then, explore eligible options and consult professionals to make an informed decision that aligns with your priorities. Important criteria might be: Return on investment, holding period, associated costs, tax benefits, exit strategies, value of investment, personal involvement needed, levels of regulation, seniority and track-record.
Can I use any sort of tax savings or other (e.g. IRA / 401k account) to fund my golden visa application?
The Portuguese law in force does not have any constrains regarding the use of IRA / 401K accounts. However, considering the nature of those accounts, it is important to consult a US Tax advisor to confirm what are the potential risks and tax liabilities involved. We can put you in contact with a local partner for this assessment.
